In Kisumu East, the poverty status of many parents is preventing their children from attending school, despite the 2013 Free Primary Education (FPE) program aimed at improving living standards and eradicating poverty.
However, local organization Eddys Kitchen Initiative has taken action by launching a school feeding program to encourage pupils to return to school. The program was introduced today at Nyalunya Primary School and will provide free breakfast and lunch to over 700 students. Director of Education Kisumu East Sub-county, Mr. Stanley Shitanda, launched the program in the presence of the Area Chief, Mr. Elijah Omumbo, the E.K. team, and the school board.
The school feeding program aims to prevent health risks among school children and improve their nutritional status, as well as increase enrolment, retention, and completion rates in primary schools. Under the program, Nyalunya Primary School pupils will be provided with two highly nutritional meals each day.
Mr. Shitanda emphasized the need for Elementary School Board Members, PTAs, and parents to support the sustainability of the program.
The initiative hopes to enroll as many elementary schools as possible in Kisumu County and accelerate girls' education in Kisumu East Sub-county.
